Former Northern State standout runner and Milbank native Jeremy Van Veen finished 53rd overall in the Chicago Marathon Sunday.
The 34-year-old Aberdeen man was 49th in the men’s division and the 30th American to cross the finish line. His time was 2 hours, 26 minutes and 28 seconds, within 23 minutes of the winner.
Dennis Kimetto of Kenya set the course record to win the Chicago Marathon Sunday in 2:03.45 to earn $175,000. Rita Jeptoo of Kenya was the women’s winner in 2:19.57 to earn $140,000 in the first major marathon in the United States since the Boston bombings.
Another Aberdeen man, Dave Derzab, ran a qualifying time for the Boston Marathon and placed 1,349th in the men’s division with a 3:09.08. There were others from the area who ran in the event as well, but those were the only ones reported.
