John Papendick of the Aberdeen American News was announced as a finalist for the 2010 National Sportscasters and Sportswriters Association South Dakota Sportswriter of the Year Award.
Papendick is the managing news-sports editor at the American News. The other sportswriter nominees are Mick Garry, Terry Vandrovec and Stu Whitney of the Sioux Falls Argus Leader and Roger Merriam of the Watertown Public Opinion. The awards will be presented May 14-16.
Garry won the award last year. Dave Vilhauer of the American News was honored in 2008. Papendick previously received the honor in 2004.
Finalists for the South Dakota sportscaster of the year are Jeff Anderson, KSDR, Watertown; Dallas Cole, KJJQ, Brookings; Mike Hendriksen, Sportsmax, Dell Rapids; Rod Pattison, KUQL, Mitchell; and Tim Smith, KMIT Radio, Mitchell.
Last year's state sportscaster of the year was Al Decker of KDSJ in Deadwood.
At the national level the finalists for sportscaster of the year include Joe Buck, Fox; Bob Costas, NBC; Al Michaels, NBC; Jon Miller, ESPN; Jim Nantz, CBS; Dan Patrick, Premiere Radio Network; and Mike Tirico, ABC and ESPN.
Four members of Sports Illustrated are nominated for sportswriter of the year, Peter King, Joe Posnanski, Gary Smith and Tom Verducci. Other writer nominees are Rick Reilly, ESPN; Bob Ryan, Boston Globe; and Bill Simmons, ESPN.
