WEBSTER - Redfield-Doland swept everything in sight during the Northeast Conference cross country meet on Thursday.
The Pheasants had both individual champions on the way to winning both team titles as well.
Brady Chase won the boys' race with teammate John Noyes second as Redfield-Doland won the boys' team title by 30 points over Milbank.
Nicolette Schmidt was the first girl to cross the finish line, helping the Pheasants capture the girls' team crown by 25 points over Webster.
Aberdeen Roncalli finished third in team points in both divisions.
We had a really good day today, said Roncalli coach Mark Stone. Both teams were third, but if you look at the team points, we were just out of second in both the girls and boys. It was probably about as good a day as we could have expected.
Daniel Holmstrom was Roncalli's top boys' finisher at 10th, followed closely by Justin Rosebrock and Will Geyer at 13th and 14th, respectively. Add in Alex Bellefeuille's 20th place showing and Stone said his team had probably our best effort running as a group.
Isabel Litzen led the Roncalli girls' with a fifth-place finish. Jianna Gellhaus was 11th, Mary Gutenkauf 14 and Jami Ewart 22nd and all three are seventh-graders. Emily Bohle was 25th.
Stone labeled seniors Bellefeuille and Bohle as team players, crucial to the success of the program.
Anybody can be a teammate, Stone explained. Team players are the ones that understand that the team is more important than they are.
Stone said everyone is important to the team results, especially heading into next week's Region 1A meet on Thursday at Webster, where the top three teams qualify for state. He noted that while the Cavaliers were close to second at the NEC, they were also close to fourth.
One of those scenarios both teams go the to the state meet and the other scenario they do not, he pointed out.
Stone is excited about the possibilities of next week's region.
We're grateful to be in the mix, Stone said. We understand that we're going to have to have a good day again. We're going to the region meet with a chance to take both teams to the state meet.
