BROOKINGS - The Aberdeen gymnastics team finished the week with two meets and no practices in three days.
Aberdeen hosted a triangular on Thursday, had no practice on Friday due to early school dismissal because of weather, and finished ninth at the Brookings Invitational on Saturday. The defending State AA champion, Watertown, won the meet with 143.625 points followed by Brookings in second with 138.800. The Golden Eagles totaled 127.600 points.
The all around champion was Jalyn Carrico of Watertown with a 37.275. Lexi Finck of Madison followed with a 36.150. Madison is the defending State A champion.
The fifth through 10th teams were pretty close to each other, said Aberdeen coach Jen Deutsch. That's encouraging even though the team score was down from our last meet. It was a big invite and we saw some new judges. In talking to the other coaches most of the team scores were down across the board. I'm pleased with the score at this large a meet and we weren't too far from Pierre and Huron.
The best event for Aberdeen was the vault where Brooke Horner finished ninth with a score of 8.9 and Taylor Schweitzer was 10th with an 8.875.
For the second straight meet Schweitzer landed a tuck tsukahara, a difficult move that no other Aberdeen gymnast has completed in competition.
It's good that she hit it again. It will keep her confidence up and consistency up, said Deutsch.
The Golden Eagles first rotation was at the uneven bars. Aberdeen did not have any falls in the event.
Next up was the balance beam where the Eagles cut down on their falls.
On Thursday at our home meet our top four gymnasts on the beam had a total of five falls and today we just had three falls. Everybody fell once but Jenny Janish had a no-fall routine. We did a better job of staying on the beam, Deutsch said.
Ashley Dean was a bright spot in floor exercise with a score of 8.425.
