August 9 - Sen. Ted Stevens killed in plane crash

On August 9, a single-engine Turbo Otter plane carrying former Alaska <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PEPLT006342" title="Ted Stevens" href="/topic/politics/ted-stevens-PEPLT006342.topic">Senator Ted Stevens</a>, former <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="ORGOV000098" title="NASA" href="/topic/science/space/nasa-ORGOV000098.topic">NASA</a> administrator <a class="taxInlineTagLink" id="PEPLT00007604" title="Sean O'Keefe" href="/topic/politics/government/sean-okeefe-PEPLT00007604.topic">Sean O'Keefe</a>, and six other passengers crashed north of Dillingham, Alaska.  Sen. Stevens was one of five people killed.  Poor weather hampered rescue efforts.  Stevens was buried at Arlington National Cemetery one month later.

Stevens was one of five people killed. Poor weather hampered rescue efforts. Stevens was buried at Arlington National Cemetery one month later.
