Foundations: Origins to 1958
1800: Iraq was part of the Ottoman Empire. Modern Iraq and Kuwait were located between Persia(modern-day Iran) and Nejd(modern-day Saudi Arabia).
Saddam's rise to power: 1979-1990
1973: Iraqi government takes over foreign oil companies within country.
Persian Gulf War: 1990-1991
Aug. 2, 1990: Iraq invades Kuwait in a border dispute and quest for more oil. United Nations issues sanctions and mandates a deadline of Jan. 15, 1991, for complete withdrawal.
