Salads carry a health halo, but most of them should come with a warning label that reads "Beware of excess levels of calories, fat and sodium," warned Dr. Joanna Dolgoff, a child and adolescent weight loss specialist.
In her new book "Red Light, Green Light, Eat, Right," Dolgoff calls out five salads that can be "major roadblocks" to weight loss.
"The beef, cheese and sour cream make this salad a calorie nightmare--and that's before you add the large, deep-fried taco shell.
Tip: Substitute grilled chicken for beef and guacamole and salsa in place of cheese and sour cream. Don't touch the taco shell!
"Pasta, potato, tuna, chicken salad and shrimp--anything with mayonnaise or sour cream."
Tip: If you make them at home, use just a little fat-free or low-fat mayonnaise.
"Horrendous!" said Dolgoff. "The dressing, the cheese and the croutons all add up to a nutritional disaster."
Tip: Pass on the cheese and croutons and use a fat-free Caesar dressing or ask for a fat-free balsamic dressing. Try to get the dressing on the side.
The blue cheese, eggs and bacon make this "a fat and cholesterol disaster," said Dolgoff.
Tip: Avoid this at a restaurant and make your own at home. Use 97 percent fat-free turkey bacon.
"This consists of about 5 ounces of roast beef, hard cheese, ham, hard-boiled egg--almost 400 calories of animal protein," Dolgoff said.
Tip: Order a grilled chicken salad with dressing on the side.
