The first official trailer for director Atom Egoyan's "The Captive" has been released online.
Set in the snowy heights of northern Ontario, the film stars Ryan Reynolds as Matthew, father to a girl who mysteriously disappears one day, only to turn up eight years later. Scott Speedman and Rosario Dawson also star as detectives investigating her case.
"The Captive" screened as part of the main competition section at this year's Cannes Film Festival. Egoyan has previously received wide acclaim and awards at Cannes for 1994's "Exotica" and 1997's "The Sweet Hereafter," the latter earning him an Oscar nom for directing.
His latest effort has been less than positively received. Justin Chang called the film "a ludicrous abduction thriller that finds a once-great filmmaker slipping into previously unentered realms of self-parody" in his Variety review.
"The Captive" will be distributed by A24, which has not yet set an official release date.
