It's been just over a year since the Supreme Court rendered a decision that let same-sex marriages begin again in California, this time for good.
On Saturday, two of the plaintiffs in the case that overturned Proposition 8, exchanged their vows before a mix of friends, celebrities and political figures at the Beverly Hilton Hotel. Paul Katami and Jeff Zarrillo stood on a platform island in the center of the hotel's pool as Ted Olson and David Boies, the legal team that led the case, officiated.
Among those attending were Jamie Lee Curtis, Rob Reiner and Lance Bass, as well as Human Rights Campaign President Chad Griffin and Rep. Mark Takano (D-Calif.). Darren Criss performed for the first dance.
If the public nature of the gathering was a bit unconventional, consider that Katami and Zarrillo spent four years in the spotlight as plaintiffs along with Kris Perry and Sandy Stier, their story chronicled in the recent HBO documentary "The Case Against 8."
Katami and Zarrillo were the first same-sex couple to marry in Los Angeles County when the state's ban was lifted last year, in a hastily-arranged ceremony that was officiated by then-Los Angeles Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa and shown live on MSNBC.
They held the Beverly Hilton event to mark the anniversary and include more family and friends, as well as to mention a few personal details, like Zarrillo's love of "The Honeymooners."
Also among the guests was retired federal judge Vaughn Walker, who presided over the Prop 8 trial and issued the decision declaring the initiative unconstitutional. Although the proceedings were not televised, they have lived on via a stage play written by Dustin Lance Black, and performed in high schools and a series of benefits with Hollywood figures in lead roles. Asked who was the favorite person who played himself, Walker smiled and said, "Brad Pitt, of course."
