Shooting has started with David Gelb ("Jiro Dreams of Sushi") directing. The project coincides with the Ford Mustang's 50-year anniversary this year. White Horse Pictures will produce with the cooperation of The Ford Motor Co.
Sinclair and Glen Zipper, former head of documentaries at Spitfire Pictures, are producing the documentary and Nicholas Ferrall is the exec in charge of production. East and Ferrall are exec producers.
More than 9 million Mustangs have been sold to date, and the car's Facebook page has 6.7 million fans. The project will include interviews with Mustang enthusiasts, rare and never-before seen archival footage along with interviews with historians and Ford insiders.
"In recent times, Steve Jobs has taught us that practical, everyday objects -- a music player, a personal computer -- can be objects of great aesthetic beauty," Sinclair said. "The Mustang was perhaps the earliest exemplar of this philosophy. There has never been a car that has resonated so deeply in American culture as the Mustang, and David Gelb will bring his unique cinematic approach to the project."
Gelb noted that Ford has allowed his team full access to archive materials and permission to document the design and creation of the 2015 Mustang.
Gelb's upcoming projects include Blumhouse's horror thriller "Lazarus," starring Olivia Wilde and Mark Duplass. His "Jiro Dreams of Sushi" was a solid performer among documentaries with $2.5 million at the U.S. box office.
Zipper produced "Undefeated," which won the Oscar for Best Documentary in 2012
Sinclair and East officially departed Exclusive Media in March to form White Horse. The exits came seven weeks after news emerged during the European Film Market that Dasym Investment Strategies -- Exclusive Media's majority owner -- had decided to restructure the company.
White Horse said in March that it was developing a Julius Caesar origins project with Mark Canton and Gianni Nunnari on board to produce.
