With Cannes past its midpoint, a major guessing game on the Croisette is: What's going to Venice?
It's a bit premature, because Venice topper Alberto Barbera and his team have yet to see plenty of what's out there. However, two titles, Turkish-German auteur Fatih Akin's "The Cut" and French helmer Benoit Jacquot's "Three Hearts," are believed to be locked in already, according to sources.
What's sure is that there is no scarcity of promising pictures that could surface in a Lido slot. Fest runs Aug. 27-Sept. 6.
From the U.S. these include: J.C. Chandor's thriller "A Most Violent Year," with Alessandro Nivola and Jessica Chastain; David Fincher's "Gone Girl," starring Ben Affleck; Alejandro Gonzalez Inarritu's "Birdman," from Fox Searchlight; and David Gordon Green's "Manglehorn," in which Al Pacino plays an ex-con.
Tim Burton's "Big Eyes" is also a possibility for a Lido launch, though it may be more of a longshot due to its Dec. 25 U.S. release date via the Weinstein Co. Terrence Malick's "Knight of Cups," starring Christian Bale, Natalie Portman and Cate Blanchett, and said to be about celebrities and excess, could be in the Venice mix, if the meticulous Malick decides it's ready.
Barbera is said to be scheduled to see these pics in June.
From France there are also ample available goods, likely to be on Barbera's radar, including Mia Hansen-Love's "Eden," Francois Ozon's "Une nouvelle amie," Cedric Khan's "Vie sauvage," Xavier Beauvois' "La rancon de la gloire" and Laurent Cantet's "Retour a Ithaque."
From Italy, the Venice team will certainly be seeing Mario Martone's biopic of poet Giacomo Leopardi, "Il Giovane Favoloso," as well as several other pics.
From Germany, Christian Petzhold's Holocaust drama "Phoenix" is a possibility.
