HONG KONG -- The Australian Academy of Cinema and Television Arts has given pride of place in its international awards category to David O. Russell's "American Hustle." The picture was nominated in seven categories, including best film, ahead of "12 Years A Slave" with six nominations.
The AACTA international awards are separate from the organization's domestic awards for Australian film and TV works, and are intended to be part of the Oscar race. The winners will be revealed in Los Angeles on Friday Jan. 10, 2014, less than a week ahead of the Academy Award nominations announcement on Jan. 16.
"Australian performers and practitioners are consistently acknowledged as among the world's best screen talent by international screen organizations such as AMPAS and BAFTA. It is vital that the Australian screen industry participates in this global conversation and has an opportunity to recognize the talents of both local and international peers," said Damian Trewhella, AACTA's CEO.
Blue Jasmine, Captain Phillips and Gravity each earned three nominations while "Osage County," "Dallas Buyer's Club" and "The Great Gatsby" each claimed a pair.
"Rush" gained its sole nomination as best film, alongside "Hustle," "Slave," "Gravity" and "Captain Phillips."
