'12 Years a Slave,' 'Fruitvale Station' Among Gotham Audience Award Nominees

The leader of the nominations list for the Gotham Independent Film Awards, Fox Searchlight's "12 Years a Slave," made the cut for the kudos' fourth annual audience award as well, with the title among the five films singled out in an online vote.

"Fruitvale Station," the Weinstein Company release that scored Gotham noms for director Ryan Coogler and actor Michael B. Jordan, also is on the list, along with a trio of documentaries: "Best Kept Secrets," about a Newark public school for students with special needs; "Don't Stop Believin': Everyman's Journey," centering on the replacement frontman of the rock band Journey; and "Jake Shimabukuro: Life on Four Strings," about a ukelele virtuoso.

The first round of voting, from which the nominees were drawn, was held Oct. 24-Nov. 5. Round two kicks off Nov. 8 and finishes Nov. 24, ahead of the awards ceremony Dec. 2.

Audience kudo will be handed out alongside the Gothams' slate of competitive awards including feature, documentary, actor, actress and director, among others. Evening also features tributes to industry figures including New York City Mayor's Office of Media and Entertainment commissioner Katherine Oliver, director Richard Linklater and actor Forest Whitaker. In addition to best feature, "12 Years a Slave" also is nommed for Gothams for actor (Chiwetel Ejiofor) and breakthrough actress (Lupita Nyong'O).

The Gothams are presented every year by the New York nonprofit Independent Film Project.
