"Bridesmaids" star and co-scribe Kristen Wiig has joined the cast of "Nasty Baby," the next project from "Crystal Fairy" director Sebastian Silva, one of Chile's top young helmers.

Juan de Dios Larrain and Pablo Larrain's Chilean shingle Fabula ("Gloria," "No") is producing with Peter Danner at Funny Balloons and Pape Boye and Violaine Pichon at Versatile.

Versatile, an ambitious sales and co-production company that launched at Cannes, is handling worldwide distribution rights in association with Funny Balloons.

An edgy and colorful drama set in New York, "Nasty Baby" centers on a gay couple, Freddy (Silva) and Mo (Tunde Adebimpe), who embark on a doomed mission to have a baby with the help of their best friend, Polly (Wiig), a family practitioner.

On top of helming and starring in "Baby," Silva penned the script.

Silva, who is one of the leading lights of Chilean cinema's newest wave and its export boom, is coming off a successful year. Helmer had two films bowing at Sundance: "Crystal Fairy," winner of the directing award, and "Magic Magic," which also played at Cannes' Directors' Fortnight.

Silva broke through with "The Maid," which won Sundance's Grand Jury nod and was nominated for a Golden Globe.

"Nasty Baby" will start shooting this fall in New York.

Wiig, who is currently filming "Welcome to Me" with Will Ferrell, is repped by UTA, Odenkirk Provissiero Entertainment and Jackoway Tyerman.

John Hopewell contributed to this report.
