The Doors program introduces new Russian films and emerging filmmaking talent to international distributors. Details of the second Doors summit and screening series, which will take place next month in St. Petersburg, will be announced at Venice.
Roskino inked a pact with Hulu last year for the online platform to distribute 12 Russian films showcased through Doors.
The state-run agency, which is headed by Catherine Mtsitouridze, is attending Venice for the second year as a partner of the Venice Film Market. As well as promoting Russian films and talent, Roskino will tubthump for the three Russian filmmakers participating in "Future Reloaded," which is a series of short films that celebrate the fest's 70th anniversary and reflects on the future of cinema. The three directors are Aleksey Fedorchenko, Marlen Khutsiev and Aleksey German Jr., who is also on the fest jury deciding the award for debut film.
Mtsitouridze said, "This is a special year for Venice and we arrive at the festival with a huge sense of pride that we have three Russian directors invited to take part in the wonderful 'Venice 70: Future Reloaded' program led by the great Marlen Khutsiev."
Mtsitouridze will also be a speaker in a Venice Film Market discussion about new funding initiatives and incentives emerging in Eastern European countries. The other panelists include Nerina Kocjancic from the Slovenian Film Institute, Izabela Kiszka-Hoflik from the Polish Film Institute, Marketa Santrochova from the Czech Film Center and producer Rudolf Biermann from the Czech Republic. The event will take place on Aug. 31, 9:30-11:00, in the Excelsior Hotel.
Other Russian films screening at Venice are Fedorchenko's "Celestial Wives of Meadow Mari," represented for international sales by Antipode, and Aleksey German Sr.'s "My Friend Ivan Lapshin."
Mtsitouridze is also editor-in-chief of the Russian version of "Variety."
