University of Miami assistant women’s basketball coach Octavia Blue was reportedly involved in an accident early Sunday morning in which a pedestrian was killed.
Blue was driving a vehicle that struck Guillermo Castano Campanioni as he was crossing 37th Avenue near Miracle Mile in Coral Gables.
Campanioni, 36, died at the scene and according to CBS4 in Miami, Blue remained at the accident site and cooperated with police, who said she was not impaired and had a green light to proceed through the intersection.
“The driver that did this to my cousin, I know it wasn’t intentionally, I know that it was the wrong place at the wrong time, but I do want to thank you for calling the cops, calling the fire rescue, trying to save his life,” Campanioni’s cousin Johanna Felipe told CBS4.
Miami released a statement via email that read, "The University of Miami and Octavia Blue, a member of our women's basketball staff, express our sincere sympathy and condolences to the family and friends of Guillermo Campanioni. No words can bring true comfort to those who loved Mr. Campanioni, but our thoughts and prayers are with them at this time."
Blue, who played at Miami from 1994-98, just completed her second season as an assistant on Katie Meier’s staff. A former standout at Nova High, Blue totaled 1,724 points in her Hurricane career before being the first Miami player selected in the WNBA Draft when she was taken with the 15th overall pick by the Los Angeles Sparks in 1998.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
