Miami landed the long-sought commitment of Booker T. Washington defensive tackle Chad Thomas Saturday morning.
Thomas announced the commitment on his Twitter page, sending out "I am a Miami Hurricane."
The message seemed innocuous enough — Thomas is versed in playing with the easily pliable emotions of fans on Twitter — but Miami coach Al Golden, who has recently taken to sending out coded commitment tweets, confirmed that Thomas had in fact committed.
"Welcome to the U," Golden tweeted. His next message was nothing more than three exclamation points.
Golden's punctuation-only tweet sums up what the Thomas commitment means to Miami. The Hurricanes have been chasing the 6-foot-6, 245-pound defensive end for two years. For the majority of that time, Miami appeared in the lead to land the under-the-radar prospect with seemingly unlimited potential.
But Thomas has had a fantastic summer. His performances at The Opening and at combines and camps around the Southeast has added significant buzz to his name. He's gone from a low three-star rating to a high four-star prospect, according to the major recruiting services. Earlier this week, he was offered by Alabama, and it seemed as if he was going to jump up recruiting boards across the nation.
Louisville made a strong push for Thomas, who camped with Florida State earlier this week and was dominant.
Thomas is Miami's 23rd commitment for the class of 2014.
