County players propel St. Thomas University to NAIA tournament

With the help of eight Broward and Palm Beach County players, St. Thomas University is the 2014 Sun Conference softball champions.

The Bobcats, coached by former Hollywood Christian School coach Jeff Norman, defeated the University of South Carolina Beaufort 5-4 in the title game Monday in Clermont.

The team has two pairs of sisters from Broward: Christina and Sasha Horton (American Heritage in Plantation) and Cristina and Natalie Sacramento (Pembroke Pines Charter). Others include Danielle Borrelli (Coral Springs Charter), Brenda Emerson (McArthur), Amanda Penton (American Heritage) and Carson Catasus (Dwyer).

The Bobcats earned a bid to the NAIA National Championship, where they will open play in Irvine, Calif., against Concordia University on Monday.

Norman also coaches the Gold Coast Hurricanes' 16-under summer travel team.
