Lofthus shipwreck

With the Atlantic Ocean a major shipping channel, hundreds of shipwrecks dot the ocean floor off Florida's coast. One is the Lofthus, a 222-foot merchant ship with fake gun ports painted on its side to frighten away pirates. It sank in an 1898 storm while carrying lumber from Pensacola to Buenos Aires. It now sits in 20 feet of water 175 yards offshore of Manalapan, less than a mile north of the Boynton Inlet. Info: MuseumsInTheSea.comLINDA REEVES / Sun Sentinel
