Castillo de San Marcos

Costumed guides greet visitors in the guard room of the Castillo de San Marcos in St. Augustine. The nation's oldest fort was built by Spanish settlers between 1672 and 1695 and used to fight off pirates, hostile natives, French, British, and later, South Carolinian forces. Today it is run by the National Park Service.
