Plantation Fire official recognized by charity

Joel Gordon, a battalion chief with the Plantation Fire Department, is among honorees being recognized for their efforts on behalf of an infant rescue organization.

A Safe Haven For Newborns announced Thursday it will salute Gordon as well as Kathie Sigler, an education consultant and former provost and chief operating officer of Miami Dade College, and Dr. Deise Granado-Villar, an executive with Miami Children's Hospital at its Nov. 9 gala in Doral.

Gordon's contribution to the 12-year-old organization was helping to sign up fire stations throughout Florida as places where babies may be safely dropped off, the group says.

Hospitals are also designated as safe havens, and the babies eventually become candidates for adoption. Sometimes the birth mothers are able to keep their infants, Save Haven for Newborns said.
