“So all the five stars and all that tech following and Rivals and all that stuff, he wasn’t on the radar. And quite honestly, I don’t believe in all that stuff, so I don’t put my kids on that radar. The schools that come in here to recruit get a look at what we have and then they get into what they do. … You don’t need the dot-com services to get recruited.”
-- Pine Crest coach Jim Pletcher to the Roanoke Times
Pine Crest coach Jim Pletcher isn't much for Rivals or 247sports, but his six-foot-five tight end, Kalvin Cline, will be heading to Virginia Tech next year after committing last week to Frank Beamer's program.
Cline is well-known for his basketball prowess at Pine Crest — he was recruited by Florida Gulf Coast, Bucknell and Richmond in hoops — but he joined the football team last year and was a standout for the Panthers, who played in the Southeast Football Conference last season.
Cline was not ranked by any of the four major scouting services in football. He scored the fourth-most career points in Pine Crest basketball history.
