Miami Police Detective James Walker

Walker, who was off-duty, was gunned down by someone with a high-powered assault rifle. Authorities say he may have unwittingly drove into a crime in progress in a neighborhood that has been plagued by violence in recent years. Police found Walker's body slumped over the steering wheel of his unmarked patrol car in a North Miami Beach alley near Northeast 164th Street and 18th Avenue, his Glock service revolver still in his hand.

Broward Sheriff's Detective Maury Hernandez

Authorities have charged David Maldonado, 24, with shooting Hernandez, who was released from the hospital on Oct. 26 with .45-caliber bullet fragments still lodged in his head. The detective had pulled Maldonado over for a routine traffic stop in Pembroke Park when Maldonado shot at the deputy, officials said. Maldonado told authorities he fled from Hernandez because he did not want to miss the birth of his child. Investigators discovered practice targets from a gun range hung on the walls of Maldonado's home in Miramar.

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputies Donta J. Manuel and Jonathan D. Wallace
Nov. 28, 2007
The deputies were killed when they were struck by another deputy's car during a pursuit near Pahokee.

Broward Sheriff's Deputy Paul Rein
Nov. 7, 2007
Rein was killed with his own handgun while escorting a prisoner, authorities said. Convicted felon Michael Mazza is charged with first-degree murder.

Florida Fish and Wildlife Conservation Commission Officer Michelle Lawless
Oct. 27, 2007
Lawless was killed when the ATV she was driving on patrol in the Everglades overturned, trapping her underneath.

Miami-Dade Police Officer Jose Somohano
Sept. 13, 2007
Somohano was killed and three other officers were wounded when suspect Shawn LaBeet opens fire during an anti-burglary operation in south Miami-Dade County. LaBeet is later killed by police in a shootout in Pembroke Pines.

Broward Sheriff's Sgt. Christopher Reyka

A gunman fatally shot Reyka, 51, in Pompano Beach while the deputy was checking the license plates of two suspicious cars outside a 24-hour Walgreens. Reyka was shot at least five times. He was pronounced dead later at North Broward Medical Center. Officials are offering $267,000 for information leading to the arrest of Reyka's killer. There have been no arrests.

Broward Sheriff's Deputy Brian Tephford

Tephford, 34, was shot to death during a traffic stop while working an off-duty detail at Versailles Gardens condominiums in Tamarac. Deputy Corey Carbocci, 37, who arrived as a backup, survived four shots to the chest and leg. Eloyn Devon Ingraham, 28, Bernard Forbes, 22, and Andre Delancy, 19, are charged in the attack. Tephford was not wearing a protective vest when he was killed.

Broward Sheriff's Deputy Ryan Seguin

Seguin, 23, was struck and killed by a car on Interstate 595 during a traffic stop. Both the driver he had pulled over and the driver who hit him had invalid licenses.

Fort Lauderdale Police Officer Jose Diaz

Diaz, driving home from an off-duty detail, responded to a call for backup on Interstate 95. Diaz parked in the right lane of southbound I-95, inches from the concrete median, and he leaped between his car and the wall to watch the vehicle's passenger side. Diaz lost his balance and fell 100 feet. He died in the emergency room.

Broward Sheriff's Detective Todd Fatta

Kenneth P. Wilk used a hunting rifle to fatally shoot Fatta, 33, who had gone to Wilk's house to arrest him on child pornography charges. Although Fatta was wearing a protective vest, he was shot in the chest near the heart and died a short time later. Angelo Cedeño, then a Broward Sheriff's sergeant, was struck in his left shoulder and survived. In August 2007, Wilk was sentenced in federal court to multiple life terms. A federal judge ruled in November 2007 that Wilk must pay more than $4.35 million in restitution to Fatta's family and to Cedeño.

Broward Sheriiff's Deputy Philip Guy Billings
April 6, 2003
Billings is shot and killed by thieves trying to steal Cadillac rims at a at Coral Cadillac dealership near Pompano Beach where Billings worked an off-duty detail. He was 25. Christopher Spicer, 24, and Kevin Chermark, 25, who were seen running from the car lot, later die in a murder-suicide as police closed in on them behind a strip mall in Palm Beach County.

Palm Beach Sheriff Deputy Donald Schavolt

Incident: Schavolt and other deputies went to check a complaint about loud music at the Casa Del Monte Trailer Park in suburban West Palm Beach where he, along with other officers, got into an altercation with a 17-year-old Lantana boy. He died of a heart attack shortly after the struggle.

Date: December 2, 2001
Incident: Garrison was struck by a car while guiding parishioners' vehicles in front of the Holy Spirit Catholic Church at 1000 Lantana Road

Palm Beach County Sheriff's Deputy Garry E, Hobbs
Date: Dec. 9, 2000
Incident: Hobbs after a long illness caused from being sprayed with a lethel level of a herbicide while recovering stolen property on June 7, 1991.

Miami Police officer William Harris Williams
Date: July 1, 2000
Incident: One of the cars in the funeral procession tried to leave the line hit Williams as he was conducting a funeral escort at at the intersection of Southwest 77th Court and 152nd Street. Williams died two days later from head injuries.
