Bid for the 3-peat: Prior to the season, then-Lakers coach Pat Riley registered the trademark "Three-peat" under U.S. Registration Number 1552980. But with Detroit bringing a stifling brand of defense to the league, the Lakers were unable to send Kareem Abdul-Jabbar into retirement with a title, despite sweeping through the first three rounds of the playoffs.
