The Miami Dolphins have signed former Southern Methodist punter Matt Szymanski to the team's training camp roster.
The Dolphins presently have Brandon Fields, who was selected to the Pro Bowl for his 2013 performance, under contract for the next few years. But it never hurts to add an extra leg, especially considering each NFL team has a 90 player roster for training camp.
Szymanski, who has experience as a kicker and punter, was signed to the Kansas City Chiefs training camp roster, and was actually put on the practice squad last year. He initially signed with Texas A&M, but transferred to SMU after his sophomore season. At SMU Szymanski handled all of the Mustang's kicking duties.
Szymanski made all but one of the 80 extra point attempts he made his junior and senior season. He also averaged 41.5 yards per punt in his collegiate career. He punted 123 times for 5,105 yards, with a long of 74 yards.
However, he only made 35 of 58 field goal attempts during his college career, and that included making 7-of-12 attempts his senior season.
The signing of Szymanski means the Dolphins presently have four specialist on the team since Szymanski joins Fields, kicker Caleb Sturgis, and lonng snapper John Denney.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
