Life, warmth enlightment -- flames large and small play several roles in spring celebrations. On Good Friday, some churches observe Tenebrae, a medieval service in which candles are doused -- one after another -- untile the large Christ Candle is snuffed out. The flame returns in the traditional Easter Vigil service. A church sets an outdoor fire, and a priest uses it to kindle the Christ Candle.
