Alright Sports fans, It is finally here. It is football seaon, and the turnout at the Davie facility for Day One of Dolphins training camp was staggering. It tells me one thing: People are starved for some football!
This is my 39th training camp and the fan response was something that I have never seen before. Maybe Jimmy Johnson's first year. People were everywhere trying to get glimpse of the 2009 team. My head was on a swivel. I was tring to see the guys that I wanted to size up.
Let's start in the secondary with the two kids. Sean Smith is a big guy. Wow! If he can cover, we are going to have ourselves a jewel of a player because he has the body. Vontae Davis, our first round pick . . . they will work him in slowly, but he needs to get on the field in some form and I expect he will.
Pat White is someone I wanted to check out. "Wildcat White" threw the ball OK. His motion isn't great but they can fix that. From the throws that I saw, it wasn't jawdropping, but it was the first day.
Cameron Wake has skinny legs. Can he hold up at the NFL level? This ain't the Canadian Football League -- this is the big time. Speaking of big time, it gets no bigger for me than the return of one of the greatest Miami Dolphins ever. Jason Taylor looked great. He is a beautiful, big cat out there.
Matt Roth better get healthy fast because Jason Taylor is behind him right now and I think J.T. has something to prove after last year's debacle in D.C.
Early in training camp there are a couple of things to monitor: Injuries and big roster moves. What is the big name that could be cut on this roster? I will give you one to think about No. 32. Jason Allen does not have a position and that is not good. The former first-round pick could be in jeopardy.
