Stuart: Canoe along South Fork St. Lucie River

Minutes off I-95, the South Fork St. Lucie River gives canoeists and kayakers a day trip of easy paddling along a river lined with majestic live oak trees draped with spanish moss. The trail goes past Halpatiokee Regional Park in Stuart. You can put in your own boat or rent from South River Outfitters, located a quarter mile east of I-95 off of State Road 76.

As you paddle, you are likely to startle a few great blue herons or spot an osprey. The lucky few may see a manatee. An intriguing picnic stop is Treasure Island, accessible only by boat, where you can stretch your legs and admire what's left of someone's ambitious treehouse.
