Jupiter: Climb 'Hobe Mountain'

Jonathan Dickinson State Park in Jupiter is well-known for the federally designated "wild and scenic" river that runs through it, the Loxahatchee. And that river is the source of many outings, from paddling trips to a scenic river cruise. But there's a whole lot more to this expansive state park -- some of the best hiking in South Florida, on trails that go far enough into pine forest wilderness to create backpacking/camping activities. And then there is Hobe Mountain. Hobe Mountain, at 86 feet, is the highest point in South Florida south of Lake Okeechobee. It only takes 10 minutes to climb up the wooden structure to the top, where you can see the sparkling ocean, the Intracoastal and miles of slash-pine forest. Even a group of pampered city folks would enjoy a picnic, a boat ride on the Loxahatchee and a climb up Hobe Mountain. To make a weekend out of it, you can reserve either a campsite or a well-equipped air-conditional cabin. Find more information on the park on its web site. -- Bonnie Gross
