The Dolphins hadn't won an AFC East title since 1994, but a win in the Christmas Eve finale in Foxboro would mark the franchise's topping the division for the 12th time. The Dolphins spent most of the day playing from behind, trailing 14-3 in the second quarter and 24-17 in the fourth. Quarterback Jay Fiedler efficiently moved the Miami offense, completing 30 of 45 passes for 264 yards and a touchdown. However, the star of the game was kicker Olindo Mare, who opened the scoring with a 47-yard field goal in the 15-degree wind chill and then, with nine seconds left, crushed a 49-yarder for the win. The game also was marked by an officiating snafu that resulted in the Dolphins being pulled from their locker room--many of them wrapped in towels--to allow the Patriots to run one more play, a Hail Mary that fell incomplete.
