Dan Marino had blown out his Achilles' tendon 11 months earlier. In the time in between there were suggestions that the Dolphins should trade him and keep Scott Mitchell, and then, after a poor preseason, rumblings grew that perhaps Bernie Kosar should start the season-opener against New England. And then, the bright lights of the regular season flipped on, and Marino looked every bit the Hall of Famer he was. He threw for 473 yards and five touchdown passes, his fifth a fourth-and-6 35-yard bomb to Irving Fryar 3:19 left to account for the final score.
