St. Lawrence Gallery, Fort Lauderdale

Wow factor: St. Lawrence Gallery's devotion to watery subjects extends beyond its backyard vista of sandy shores and sunsets. You'll find yourself immersed in aquatic-themed paintings, sculptures, jewelry, antiques and quick gift picks.

Background: Owner Randy Liebig splashed onto the local arts scene in late 2004, creating the nautical concept to stand apart from other galleries. The name comes from the St. Lawrence River, a nod to Liebig's roots in upstate New York. Visits to his hometown, Alexandria Bay, inspired the architect to add a second career as a curator-entrepreneur. There, he found encouragement from gallery owner Michael Ringer, his former high school art teacher and longtime friend. Today, Liebig's 2,000-square-foot space showcases works by Ringer and almost 100 artists nationwide. He has resided in South Florida since 1988.
Editor's picks: Seashell-encrusted paper weights ($10); sterling silver sand-dollar charm on an aqua beaded necklace by Hawaii jewelry designer Catherine Weitzman ($160); handblown glass octopus sculpture created at Michael Hopko's California-based studio ($295); an oil painting of a lakefront Adirondack Mountain setting by Ringer ($8,400).
