Cooper City's Shuham named FHSAA Scholar Athlete of the Year

Sun Sentinel

Cooper City's Simon Shuham has put together an impressive high school resume.

He earned varsity letters in three sports--golf, soccer, and volleyball. He's a National Merit Finalist and a National Advanced Placement Scholar. He finished with a 3.99 GPA and was the school's valedictorian.

Now Shuham has picked up one of the state's biggest honors. Monday night, he was named the male Florida High School Athletic Association Scholar-Athlete of the Year at a banquet in Gainesville. Kristin Sweeney of Tallahassee Maclay won the female honoree.

They were among 24 nominees for the top honors, selected from the FHSAA Academic All-State team that was announced earlier this spring.

Shuham, who was also Cooper City's Wendy's High School Heisman recipient, was also a member of National Honor Society, Debate Club, Spanish Honor Society and Spanish Club. He totaled more than 600 hours of community service and is planning to study either engineering or applied mathematics at Harvard.

According to the FHSAA, all 24 members of the Academic All-State team will receive $1,000 scholarships, while Shuham and Sweeney will receive an additional $3,000.

Boca Raton's Christine Sullivan was also selected to the Academic All-State team.
