Senator Maria Sachs is a practicing attorney specializing in constitutional law. She has maintained her private practice for the last 20 years and is admitted to the bars of California and Florida. She graduated from the University of Maryland where she earned a Bachelor's Degree with honors in Political Science. Maria went on to earn a Master's Degree in International Political Relations from Boston University, and later lectured in Political Ideology at various military bases throughout Europe for the University of Maryland.
Coming to Florida to attend the University of Miami Law School, Maria began work with Janet Reno as one of the very first female prosecutors. After her years as an Assistant State Attorney, Maria became a litigation associate at the prestigious Broward based commercial firm, Ruden Barnett McClosky Schuster & Russell, P.A. Becoming involved in community affairs, she was elected as President of the Broward County Women Lawyers Association and, later, President of the Florida Association for Women Lawyers, Broward Chapter (FAWL).
Wanting to open her own business, Maria, with other lawyers, opened a law practice which continues to grow. Being elected Chair of the Juvenile Detention Advisory Board, Maria realized that more needed to be done on the state level for local concerns. She successfully ran for State House of Representatives in 2006 and served two terms. She has now served in the Florida Senate for three years and is a proponent of economic development through funding for higher education, incentives for startup companies, and technical training for our students. Maria passed laws expanding the foreign languages taught in our public schools to 15 global languages and supported the advancement of science, technology, engineering, and mathematics (STEM) throughout our state. Also, a champion for the rights of victims, senior citizens and veterans, Maria has passed a veteran's bill every year in honor of her late father, a WWII veteran. Maria is recognized as a Business Leader by the Palm Beach County Business Leadership Network and the National Association of Women Business Owners (NAWBO).
Maria Sachs is proud and honored to serve the people of Palm Beach and Broward residents as the State Senator.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
