About Eleanor Sobel

Senator Eleanor Sobel has dedicated her life to serving her community.  She is a teacher, wife, mother, community activist, business woman, and consummate public servant.  Sen. Sobel has served as a Hollywood City Commissioner, State Representative, Broward County School Board member, and now State Senator.   Earlier in her career she worked as a junior high school teacher in Brooklyn and later provided extensive instruction in special education.  Senator Sobel currently serves as State Senator for District 33 in Broward County, Florida, representing 330,000 people in 10 cities. This past year, Senator Sobel was named Chair of the Broward Legislative Delegation. In addition, this past session Senator Sobel was appointed Chair of the Florida Senate Committee on Children, Families, and Elder Affairs, and Vice-Chair of the Ethics and Elections Committee, Select Committee on the Patient Protection and Affordable Care Act, and the Health Policy Committee. Most recently, Senator Sobel received the 2013 Legislator of the Year Award from the Elder Law Section of the Florida Bar.

Senator Sobel is a product of public schools.  She is a graduate of Brooklyn College with Master’s Degrees from City University of New York and Columbia University.  In 2003 she attended Harvard University’s Kennedy School of Government earning a certificate in state and local government leadership.

The accumulation of honors and awards dedicated to Senator Sobel is a testament to her work in health care, education and women’s rights.  Senator Sobel is proud to have received “The National Association of School Psychologists-2007 Special Friend of Children Award”, and “The March of Dimes-2007 Lawton Chiles Public Service Award.” She has also received recognition from the “Center for Women’s Policy Study,” and had the honor of having Hollywood Hills High School dedicate their women’s softball field as, “Eleanor Sobel Softball Field.”  It is obvious that Senator Sobel loves to serve and is a natural leader.

As a mother of two, grandmother of two, wife, public servant, teacher, business woman and long time Hollywood resident, she has devoted her time and voice to causes she holds nearest to her heart and those nearest to the hearts of her constituents.  Eleanor Sobel is driven to work for her community out of a desire to empower every person to keep learning, speak up, participate, and make a difference.
