Adventurer Steve Fossett, Feb. 15 Steve Fossett, the millionaire adventurer who risked his life many times while seeking to set records in high-tech balloons, gliders and jets, was declared dead on Friday, Feb. 15, 2008, five months after he vanished while flying in an ordinary small plane. He was 63. The self-made tycoon, who became the first person to circle the world solo in a balloon in 2002 , was last seen Sept. 3, 2007, after taking off in a single-engine plane from an airstrip near Yerington, Nevada, heading toward Bishop, Calif. He is shown here in 2005.
