It’s nature in reverse.
South Florida’s professional theater goes into hibernation during the summer and wakes back up in the fall (when the flocking snowbirds signal tourist season).
But community theater is more perennial. Following is a rundown of local summertime shows.
CURTAIN CALL PLAYHOUSE
“Cinderella and the Fairy Godmother, A Musical”
What: The fairy tale comes to life complete with: evil stepsisters, glass slippers, a pumpkin carriage, a handsome prince and timeless tunes.
When: July 12-14. Showtimes are 7 p.m. July 12; noon and 2 p.m. July 13; 2 p.m. July 14

LAKE WORTH PLAYHOUSE
“In the Heights”
What: The Tony-winning “In the Heights” rocks with the sounds of the Caribbean and rap music. The Latin-flavored musical was a huge Broadway hit, and concerns the dreams and struggles of three generations in the vibrant Washington Heights neighborhood in New York.
When: July 12-28. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Thursday through Saturday; 2 p.m. matinees Saturdays and Sundays; 4 p.m. Sundays

PEMBROKE PINES THEATER OF THE PERFORMING ARTS
What: The musical comedy that was a smash on Broadway and a hit movie starring John Travolta (in drag, no less) comes to Pembroke Pines. Based on the original movie by John Waters, the story chronicles how music and dance helped desegregate Baltimore in the early 1960s.
When: July 12-Aug. 4. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 2 p.m. matinees Saturdays and Sundays

MAIN STREET PLAYERS
What: Recipient of the 2007 Pulitzer Prize for drama, this poignant play focuses on a family dealing with the loss of a child.
When: July 26-Aug. 11. Showtimes are 8 p.m. Fridays and Saturdays; 2 p.m. Sundays. There is an 8 p.m. show Thursday, Aug. 1.
