Annette Kellerman arrived as an accomplished swimmer and actress from Australia in 1907. Her appearance in a swimming suit of her own making got her thrown in jail in Massachusetts for "indecent exposure." Her trial was the second turning point in the history of the swim suit, as the Victorian standards that incarcerated her were swept away by an outcry of support and changed attitudes.Coinciding with the woman's suffrage movement, women began to control their own destinies...many learned how to swim.
