Seeing Billy Joel or Journey easily could cost $100. But this summer, you can get a taste of their music for free.
Tribute acts and light classical bands form the city of Boca Raton's Summer Music Series, which begins Sunday, June 15.
Six tribute acts, playing the music of Jimmy Buffett, U2, the Eagles, Journey, Grateful Dead and Billy Joel — will perform on Friday nights at Mizner Park Amphitheater. The concert bands, playing jazz, Broadway medleys, big-band music and classical selections, will appear on Sundays. The FAU Summer Concert Band will kick off the series at 7 p.m.
"We think everything we booked will bring in a great crowd, and be family-friendly," says Chrissy Biagiotti, community relations manager for Boca Raton.
The Symphonia Boca Raton has its version of a "petting zoo," Biagiotti notes. Musicians invite children to come and try their instruments, to see if music is an endeavor they may be interested in pursuing.
Blankets and chairs are welcome, and chairs can be rented for $5. Attendees are encouraged to walk, bike, car-pool and use free parking at City Hall and the Boca Raton Library. Food and beverages will be for sale. No outside alcoholic beverages are allowed, and all shows will take place rain or shine.
