Fans of bacon just may like the sound of a coffee-bacon-infused burger with bourbon-onion jam and spiced-brown-sugar-bacon curls.
Created by Serhad and Yasmin Oktay, owners of Gimme a Burger in Deerfield Beach and Pembroke Pines, the burger won first place at last year’s BaconFest Florida at the Seminole Hard Rock. The win qualified the Oktays to compete this past November in the bacon category of the World Food Championships in Las Vegas.
“We didn’t win in Vegas, but it was a great experience,” says Serhad Oktay, who will be watching the bacon competition play out on the FYI network at 10 p.m. Thursday. It’s one in a six-part series featuring different categories from the Vegas championships.
Oktay says Gimme a Burger was one of 34 restaurants from across the country, and the only one from South Florida, to compete for bacon glory.
“We were novices, and didn’t know what to expect,” he says. “Some of these folks make a living doing these competitions. They have entourages or, if you want to call them, posses, and a dog and pony show to go with it. “
The $8.95 coffee-bacon-infused burger has been on the Gimme a Burger menu since their February 2013 BaconFest triumph. But in celebration of the TV appearance, diners who visit the restaurant Thursday through Sunday will get free fries and a soft drink with purchase of the prizewinner.Copyright © 2015, The Baltimore Sun
