Navy kids' boot campThe Armel-Leftwich Visitor Center of the Naval Academy is sponsoring a "Navy Way" Boot Camp from 10 a.m. to noon for "recruits" ages 6 to 12. Recruits are issued a sailor's cap, learn Navy terms, march, chant, follow orders and eat in a simulated mess. The cost is $32 and includes a "dixie cup" cap, boot camp and lunch. Advanced Boot Camp runs from 1 to 3:30 p.m. and is for graduates of Basic Boot Camp who are ages 9 to 12. "Swabbies" take seamanship training, learn how to use semaphore flag and march in precision drill. The Smithsonian Environmental Research Center, 647 Contees Wharf Road, Edgewater, will hold a Remotely Operated Vehicle workshop from 1 p.m. to 4 p.m. The program will teach about remotely operated vehicles that help researchers gather information under water, and participants will assemble a ROV to test under water.
