Gabrielle Douglas, 17, has been busy. With two Olympic gold medals from the 2012 London Games, and plans to compete in 2016, she just released her second book, "Raising the Bar" (Zonderkidz). (Her first was "Grace, Gold and Glory: My Leap of Faith.") We caught up with Douglas on her cross-country book tour. The following is an edited version of our conversation:
Q: How do you have two books at your age?
A: It's kind of crazy to think about it, right? I wanted to share my journey with the world. There's also wrong information on the Internet, so what better way than to put it in your own words?
Q: When you come to Chicago what do you do for fun?
A: I love to hang out with my family members. My mom's family is actually based here. My grandparents are awesome.
Q: You had a rough time when you were growing up with being teased. How do you encourage other people to love themselves?
A: I had hardships growing up, and I'm so blessed to be in this position to tell other girls: No matter how many hardships (you experience) growing up, you can still achieve your dreams. I want to help them believe in themselves and encourage them to go after their dreams.
Q: Do you have any rituals before a routine?
A: When I was younger I had to rub this happy rock. I had to rub it before every competition, and when I fell, I'd be like, "I didn't rub my happy rock!" But I don't really have any superstitions now.
Q: Have a boyfriend?
A: No! (frowns) I don't have time. What am I going to tell him, "Sorry, honey, I have to go to the gym for five hours!"
Q: Do you ever just sit on the couch and veg out?
A: Yes! Every once in a while I will just do nothing and watch television.
Q: Is there any celebrity that you haven't met yet that you'd like to?
A: I really want to meet Emma Stone. I love her.
Q: How much do you train?
A: Six days a week. For three days, I do 5-1/2 hours, and the other days, I do four hours.
Q: That's it?
A: I know! I thought I would go to the Olympics and go home and sing "Kumbayah" to my family like, "OK, that's it!" And now I'm traveling the world! It never stops.
