Former University of Virginia lacrosse player accused of beating girlfriend to death

A Charlottesville jury on Wednesday recommended a sentence of 26 years in prison for George Huguely V, after finding him guilty of second-degree murder and grand larceny in the 2010 alcohol-fueled beating death of Yeardley Love, his former University of Virginia girlfriend. He was acquitted of more serious murder charges, requiring premeditation. No one spoke on Huguely's behalf during the sentencing proceeding, aside from his attorneys. He hung his head once the guilty verdicts were read, and sat quietly between his attorneys during the sentencing phase of the trial, which began immediately. Above, members of Huguely's family exit the courthouse.

Victim was homeless high school student

In an opening statement, a Baltimore prosecutor offered jurors in a murder trial a painful portrait Wednesday of the final moments in the life of Jason Mattison Jr. (right). She said the victim "met with a nightmare, and that nightmare is Dante Parrish." But Parrish's lawyer warned jurors of a long, complicated case in which she plans to challenge evidence and show that police compromised the crime scene.
