NFL linemen are often nicknamed “buffet bashers.”
With reason. These guys are as tall as NBA power forwards and weigh as much as a Mack truck.
Have you ever thought about what it takes to keep the entire Bears team fed and fueled during training camp?
It’s a daunting task.
These not-so-gentle giants and their semi-smaller teammates depart Wednesday for Olivet Nazarene University in Bourbonnais to begin training camp.
Plenty of sweltering two-a-day practices, conditioning drills and lifts lay ahead. That’s a lot of calories to replace.
According to Sodexo, a food management service that’s been supplying food for Bears training camp for more than a decade, meals are designed for each player’s specific positions.
Meals are color coded to identify nutritional aspects such as high-protein, low and high fat, or high-carb so players can make the right meal selection.
During the 21 days the Bears will be at camp, the team will consume an average of 2,516 pounds of deli meat and 2,250 pounds of king crab legs.
But players and staff also will listen to their mother’s age-old advice and eat their vegetables. Lots and lots of vegetables.
According to Sodexo, the team will eat more than 1,000 pounds of lettuce, 510 pounds of tomatoes and 765 pounds of cucumbers.
And feeding these guys is a round-the-clock operation.
Food preparation begins each day at 4 a.m. and wraps up at midnight, with staff providing snacks throughout the day.
Maybe the entire team should just be called buffet bashers.
