HBO has released the first teaser for "The Normal Heart," the long-awaited film adaptation of Larry Kramer's Tony Award-winning play. It's heart-wrenching.
"I'm trying to understand why nobody gives a shit that we're dying," Mark Ruffalo's character, Ned Weeks, screams in the preview.
Directed by Ryan Murphy, the film examines the onset of the HIV/AIDS crisis in New York during the early 1980s. Gay activists and their allies in the medical community fight to expose the truth about the growing epidemic to a populace and president who are in total denial.
The cast includes Ruffalo, Matt Bomer, Taylor Kitsch, Jim Parsons and Julia Roberts, with appearances by Alfred Molina, Joe Mantello, Jonathan Groff, Denis O’Hare, Stephen Spinella, Corey Stoll, Finn Wittrock and BD Wong.
The teaser may only be 45 seconds long, but it packs a wallop as characters played by Ruffalo, Roberts and Kitsch fight to be heard.
The HBO Films original premieres 8 p.m. May 25 on HBO.
