Greater Grand Crossing on Tuesday logged its fifth homicide in about a month, a RedEye analysis of preliminary police data found.
An 18-year-old man was shot to death in the 6900 block of South Princeton Avenue, police said.
Greater Grand Crossing has recorded 19 homicides so far this year, according to RedEye data. The South Side community area logged 21 homicides last year.
Citywide, gunshot homicides were recorded in the last week in Calumet Heights, Chatham, New City, Uptown, Washington Park and West Elsdon, data shows.
Meanwhile, a man was stabbed to death Aug. 30 in the 7000 block of South Artesian Avenue in Chicago Lawn, police said.
Thirty-four fatal stabbings have been recorded so far this year--already surpassing 2011 and 2010 totals. Stabbing fatalities are up 78 percent this year compared to the same period last year, RedEye data found.
August ended last week with 57 homicides, up from 37 homicides in August 2011, according to RedEye data. This was the deadliest August since August 2010, which saw 60 homicides, RedEye data found.
Six homicides have been logged so far this month. Thirty-nine homicides were recorded in September 2011, RedEye determined.Copyright © 2014, The Baltimore Sun
