The 11th Doctor and his latest companion, Clara Oswin Oswald, will face familiar foes and scary new enemies when Season 7 resumes later this month on BBC America. The network Thursday released details about the midseason premiere, "The Bells of St. John," as well as the clue-filled poster and trailer (watch below).
In the poster, the Doctor (Matt Smith) sports a purple smoking jacket along with a gold bow tie--"bow ties are cool," remember? He strides a motorcycle with Clara (Jenna-Louise Coleman) hanging onto his waist as they race down what must be The Shard, the recently opened London skyscraper that, along with iconic landmark Westminster Bridge, will be used as the backdrop for "The Bells of St. John."
In the "modern, urban thriller," set to air at 7 p.m. CT March 30, the Doctor finds "something sinister lurking in the Wi-Fi," according to BBC America. Written by "Who" lead writer and executive producer Steven Moffat, the episode introduces a brand new nemesis called the Spoonheads.
What else will the duo face in the upcoming eight episodes? I did a little rumor research in the Whoverse today and came up with some ideas you can listen to in my analysis of the poster in the video above. (If you're reading this story on an archived page without video--so annoying I know--click here to watch the video.)
But if you look carefully at the broken, spraying bits of glass surrounding the Doctor and Clara, you'll see what are likley the Spoonheads and other upcoming foes, including Cybermen, the Ice Warriors and what I think is a Sycorax. There also are two images of a top-hat wearing, white-faced alien with the sharpest of teeth, too. Maybe it's some kind of alien ghost vampire?
Besides Moffat, Neil Gaiman ("Coraline"), Mark Gatiss ("Sherlock"), Neil Cross ("Luther") and Stephen Thompson ("Sherlock") wrote the upcoming episodes. Guest stars include Dame Diana Rigg and her daughter, Rachael Stirling, as well as Dougray Scott, Warwick Davis, Celia Imrie, Jessica Raine and Tamzin Outhwaite. I also see Liam Cunningham in the trailer.
You can expect to see Dr. Simeon (Richard E. Grant) again, and probably Eleven's pals--the Sontaran Commander Strax (Dan Starkey), the Silurian Madame Vastra (Neve McIntosh) and her human wife, Jenny (Catrin Stewart).
And if Moffat's exclamation-filled quote is to be believed, the Doctor and Clara will be covering a lot of ground and, um, water and sky, too.
"It's the 50th year of 'Doctor Who' and ... we're up in the sky and under the sea! We're running round the rings of an alien world and then a haunted house. There's new Cybermen, new Ice Warriors and a never before attempted journey to the centre of the TARDIS," Moffat said in a release. "And in the finale, the Doctor's greatest secret will at last be revealed! If this wasn't already our most exciting year it would be anyway!"
Hmm, what could that secret be?
