Kid Color (real name: Kyle Woods), 24, who works as assistance music director at Smart Bar (Noon Sun. at Perry's stage)
Sound: “House music crafted with a live disco influence.”
How he’ll stand out from others on the Perry’s stage: “Like a lot of DJs I’m really selective of the songs that I play and one of the reasons I’m really excited to play Lollapalooza is because the sound that I really like going for is this live sounding dance music. I really like dance music that sounds like there’s a live band energy to it. There’s not that many funky disco and house kind of DJs on the bill this year, so I guess that in a way can separate me.”
Advice: “Stay hydrated and wear good dancing shoes.”
Past Lolla experience: Road-tripped after senior year of high school in California and made it just in time for Daft Punk in 2007; has gone three times since then. “There’s been some amazing performances. Every chance I got to see the Yeah Yeah Yeahs. They’re amazing. They’re one of my all-time favorite bands. Even three people on stage the energy’s insane. They were incredible. I’m a big fan of My Morning Jacket and Band of Horses also. Growing up as more of a rock kid, you’ve got to appreciate more of that stuff too.”
What Lolla artist would make him star-struck: “I grew up listening to At the Drive-In. That was a huge band in my high school years that helped me even understand what underground music was in a way. Even just seeing one of those guys, not even meeting [them], would be great. Also Justice’s album was a huge one for me—their first one, “Cross.” I’m really psyched for their set too. I’m playing some after-parties with Twin Shadow, and that guy seems like a really cool guy. I wouldn’t mind meeting him.
