Football: Loyola runs over Maryland Christian

Senior feature running back Ryan Black racked up 174 yards on 17 carries and totaled three touchdowns in Loyola Blakefield's soggy 35-0 victory over Maryland Christian in Towson on Friday afternoon.

Junior quarterback Jake Clise chipped in 145 yards on 11 rushes and added two more scores for the Dons (2-1), who will meet Fork Union Military Academy on Sept. 30 before getting into the heart of their Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association A Conference schedule with showdowns against McDonogh (Oct. 7) and Gilman (Oct. 14).

Loyola kept its offense vanilla against Maryland Christian (2-3), feasting on the home-schooled team with superior size and quickness to take control early when Black bolted up the middle and through the Saints' defense on a 69-yard touchdown run on the first play from scrimmage.

The 6-foot, 205-pound Bryant University recruit bowled over several enemy defenders in the non-league contest, when he wasn't eluding them with shifty moves and good speed.

"Ryan's development has been awesome this year," Loyola coach Brian Abbott said. "We have no problem giving him 20 carries a game."

Clise, expertly running the spread offense, was almost as effective, darting past lunging Maryland Christian defenders for 47 yards and a touchdown on the Dons' next possession for a 14-0 advantage.

The Saints, who edged MIAA B Conference contender Boys' Latin, 16-15, two weeks ago, then were exploited by Clise's 31-yard TD run up the middle to fall even further behind early in the second period.

"We didn't play last week" because of a bye in the schedule, Abbott said. "So we had to play this game," despite the deluge that made the Dons' home field a muddy mess.

"Their kids played hard, and that was good for our boys," he added.

Loyola junior linebacker Cole Boozer recorded several sacks, seniors Matt Higgins and Patrick Coan had interceptions and senior Jamie Dubyoski converted all five extra-point attempts for the winners.
