Boys' Latin topples Pallotti in boys basketball

Good luck to opponents trying to slow down Boys' Latin senior shooting guard Casey Rees.

After scoring 27 points in a loss to Wicomico on Dec. 29, Rees totaled a season-high 29 points Friday night to lead the Lakers to a 71-61 victory over visiting and No. 10 Pallotti in a Maryland Interscholastic Athletic Association B Conference game.

Rees shot 10-for-14 from the field and made eight of 11 free throws.

"He's been really stepping up and getting points when we have needed them," said Rees' father Cliff, the Boys' Latin coach.

Marcus Scott led Pallotti with 21 points and Marcquise Reed contributed 19.

Pallotti (13-4 overall, 6-2 league) made Rees and the Lakers sweat the victory out.

Boys’ Latin led by as many as 12 points early in the third quarter, but Pallotti cut the lead to five the end of the quarter on Marcquise Reed's three-pointer at the buzzer.

The Lakers (11-3, 6-0) boosted their lead to 58-51 early in the fourth quarter on Rees' reverse layup.

Pallotti, however, got as close as 60-58 with 3:51 remaining.

But Boys' Latin closed with a 11-3 run to prevail. The Lakers shined from the line down the stretch, going 6-for-8 and finishing 25-29 overall.

Pallotti went 1-for-5 from field the final 3:15 and shot 32 percent overall.

"We normally shoot around 45 percent," Pallotti coach Shae Johnson said. "We missed a lot of layups tonight."

Brendan Fields and Blair Brooks added 14 points apiece for the winners. also made the scoring column for the Lakers. Jordan Brooks (6), Colin Heacock (6) and Devin Shewell (2).

Jeff Holland (6), Fernando (5), Joel Peebles (4), Tariq Owens (4) and Jordan Preston (2) also scored for Pallotti.
